Virginia Beach reaches halfway point in 10-year flood protection plan (13newsnow.com) — Virginia Beach is halfway through its 10-year, voter-approved flood protection program, with millions already invested in neighborhood drainage, pump stations, dredging, and tide gates across the city. From Aragona and Asheville Park to Windsor Woods and Bow Creek, officials say completed and ongoing projects are boosting stormwater capacity and resilience, with more than $73 million in grants secured and over $1.5 billion in work ultimately planned.
   

2. Virginia Aquarium announces 'Halloween Nights' in October (wavy.com) — Virginia Beach families can plan ahead for the Virginia Aquarium's new "Halloween Nights" on October 16 and 17, featuring costumes, scuba divers, spooky science, and a DJ-led parade. The evening events also collect gently used costumes and candy wrappers for recycling, with ticket proceeds supporting the Aquarium's education, conservation, and animal care programs.
   

3. Virginia Beach earns higher FEMA rating, boosting flood insurance discount (wtkr.com) — Virginia Beach residents with National Flood Insurance Program policies are set to receive a larger automatic discount after the city earned a higher FEMA Community Rating System score, effective October 1, 2026. The move from Class 7 to Class 6 boosts eligible policy discounts from 15% to 20%, with no action usually needed from homeowners, though residents should check renewals and call their agents if the savings don't appear.
   

4. Executive Leadership Series Event Gathers Region's Leaders for Gubernatorial Panel Discussion at Regent University (regent.edu) — Regent University in Virginia Beach has kicked off its Executive Leadership Series with a luncheon featuring four former Virginia governors discussing America's founding principles and modern leadership. Mayor Bobby Dyer and local business leaders highlighted regional collaboration, while organizers invited residents to the next luncheon in February 2027 at the Founders Inn and Spa.
   

5. Kiggans' Bill to Name Virginia Beach Post Office After WWII Veterans Col. Edward D. Shames Passes House (house.gov) — A U.S. House bill has passed to rename the post office at 1225 Kempsville Road in Virginia Beach after World War II veteran Colonel Edward D. Shames, who later made the city his home. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Jen Kiggans, honors Shames' service with Easy Company and his longtime advocacy for veterans, and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
